Muslim History Month-III

In 2021, drawing inspiration from Black History Month and Dalit History Month, ‘Zariya’ initiated the first ever ‘Muslim History Month’ (MHM) as part of its goal to promote a deeper understanding of Muslim culture, art, history, and the diversity of Muslim communities worldwide.
The 2026 series of Muslim History Month will centre on Muslim and Islamic art and architecture, highlighting their enduring legacy across regions and civilizations. Islamic art, architecture and performing art span continents, reflecting centuries of creativity, technical precision and cultural expression. From intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy to monumental structures and refined craftsmanship, these artistic traditions embody a rich historical continuity shaped by diverse societies and local influences.
This year’s series will bring together contributions from experts, artists, and researchers from around the world who have engaged deeply with Islamic art and architectural heritage. Through their scholarship and creative practice, they present the historical development, regional variations, and contemporary interpretations of these traditions. The articles will explore how artistic forms have evolved over time while retaining distinctive aesthetic principles and spiritual dimensions.
By focusing on Muslim and Islamic art and architecture, the 2026 Muslim History Month aims to broaden understanding of the intellectual, cultural, and artistic achievements of Muslim societies. The series seeks to encourage thoughtful engagement with this global heritage and to highlight the diversity of voices.
