Muslim History Month-II
Muslim History Month II ( 2025 ) – Celebrating histories of Muslim women from across the Globe!
Greetings from Zariya,
In 2021, inspired by Black History Month and Dalit History Month, ‘Zariya’ launched a first ever ‘Muslim History Month’ (MHM) as part of its goal to further understanding of Muslim culture, art, history, communities and diversity within these Muslim communities across the world.
Ramzaan/Ramadan is the time that we aim to celebrate MHM every year, like we did in its inauguration in 2021.
Muslims are not a monolith. Therefore, we intend to focus on the multicultural aspect of the Muslim community through MHM. MHM will explore history, stories and experiences by diverse writers about their own versions of what constitutes Muslim culture according to their lived experiences, research etc. Zariya wants to create avenues for greater understanding of, and with, Muslim communities by sharing information of our past and present. The more the world knows, the less of an ‘other’ Muslims will be.
In 2025, Ashwini and I through Zariya and your contributions, are looking to celebrate Muslim Women from across the world who have created history in their own way and are an inspiration to everyone across the world. From Egypt to Iran and Indonesia to Palestine, there is a very rich history of Muslim women who have contributed to culture, education, history, art, religion and politics among others from time immemorial but not much exists to celebrate them and their efforts. Muslim History Month in 2025, during Ramzaan/Ramadan seeks to bring forth histories of Muslim Women who are not among us anymore, through your support.
If you would like to contribute to Muslim History Month 2025, with the theme of ‘Muslim Women creating history’ from across the world, please reach out to us at zariya.contact@gmail.com. We are looking at articles on the theme celebrating women who are not among us anymore, between 800-1000 words. Although English is the preferred language for ease, please feel free to let us know if you are comfortable writing in another language and we will try our best to accommodate that. Once we agree on the Muslim woman whose contribution you would like to highlight with us, the deadline for submission of the first draft would be February 5th, 2025. We will be showcasing your work once finalised on our various social media handles and it will also be hosted on our website for others to access and learn from.
We would also be grateful if you could please share suggestions on whom we should write about in this year’s MHM based on the description above. Muslim Women from your country, region etc whose histories need to be told, shared and documented!
