Zariya - Women’s Alliance for Dignity and Equality

about image

Jai Bhim, As-salamuAlaykum

It is no secret that Dalit and Muslim communities today are two of the most marginalized sections in Indian society. We, the women of these communities are at the intersections of bearing many layers of discrimination and marginalisation. Added to this is the reality that our causes have long been appropriated and the mic has been taken away from us, even when many of us are capable of voicing our own concerns. We as Dalit and Muslim women look for solidarity, not appropriation.

Zariya, founded in 2020, which literally translates into ‘Means’ is a humble initiative to bring our issues to the fore. The everyday lived realities of Dalit and Muslim women are very similar to each other, there are ofcourse differences but none so big that can stop us from working together, towards the betterment of our own. The initiative aims to bring together our women from marginalised backgrounds, Dalit, Muslim, Adivasi and address our concern: right from livelihood and education to documenting stories of our struggle. We want to write our own stories, have our voice heard.

We are not part of any political party and adhere to Indian constitutional values and ethos. We have zero tolerance for sexual abuse/harassment/violence of any kind. We pledge to try our honest best to work for and with all our sisters who identify themselves as women from marginalised backgrounds.

IQRA

IQRA: The Arabic term 'Iqra' means 'Read'. Through 'Iqra' we intend to create a knowledge platform and repository for stories, narratives, articles, readings that focus on diverse areas of history, culture, law, gender etc related to Dalit, Muslim and other marginalised communities. This section provides a source of valuable literature that needs to be documented, revived and reread. Iqra is part of our knowledge sharing mission.

Muslim History Month-II

We are looking to celebrate Muslim Women from across the world who have created history in their own way and are an inspiration to everyone across the world. From Egypt to Iran and Indonesia to Palestine, there is a very rich history of Muslim women who have contributed to culture, education, history, art, religion and politics among others from time immemorial but not much exists to celebrate them and their efforts. Muslim History Month in 2025, during Ramzaan/Ramadan seeks to bring forth histories of Muslim Women through your support.

If you would like to contribute to Muslim History Month 2025, with the theme of ‘Muslim Women creating history’ from across the world, please reach out to us at zariya.contact@gmail.com. We are looking at articles on the theme celebrating women, 800-1000 words. Although English is the preferred language for ease, please feel free to let us know if you are comfortable writing in another language and we will try our best to accommodate that. Once we agree on the Muslim woman whose contribution you would like to highlight with us, the deadline for submission of the first draft would be January 31st 2025. We will be showcasing your work once finalised on our various social media handles and hosted on our website for others to access and learn from.
